The course aims to provide technical and scientific knowledge as well as to deepen and specialize in the planning of transport systems and sustainable mobility interventions through practical training and the preparation of integrated studies in real conditions. The course focuses on special topics and practical methods related to the professional rights of the future graduates of the Department. It also aims at consolidating theoretical knowledge and practical training for implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. The general objective is for students to acquire the necessary knowledge and practical experience for integrated transport planning and the preparation of transport and traffic studies with the aim of promoting sustainable mobility, taking into account the general complementarity between transport, urban and spatial planning.
The general learning outcomes include comprehension of the components of sustainable transport systems and practical involvement in integrated transport planning and the preparation of transport studies with the aim of accessibility and mobility for all, environmental sustainability, adressing climate change, energy transition, well-being, economic competitiveness and sustainable spatial development.
In this context, students will get involved with practical issues (case studies) related to traditional and new forms of transportation, such as soft mobility, public transportation, combined transportation, shared mobility, electrification, autonomous vehicles, micromobility, mobility as a service, demand management for travel, etc.
Knowledge
After the successful completion of the course, students will have acquired high-level scientific and technical knowledge in the field of transportation science. Specifically, they are expected to be able to comprehensively analyze urban mobility problems, highlight and assess their transport and external impacts, formulate evidence-based proposals and transport planning approaches and develop scenarios and solutions to promote sustainable and innovative urban mobility.
Skills
After the end of the course, students will be able to collect, analyze and interpret traffic and other data, but also to choose and apply appropriate planning approaches and research and study tools, depending on the individual subject of the case study. Also, they are expected to have familiarized themselves with the main factors that influence travel choices and the behavior of travelers in general, the interactions of the transport system with the parameters of sustainable urban development and the innovative applications in the field of urban mobility.
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have understood the gaps and weaknesses of conventional transport planning approaches. They will have acquired engineering and design skills in the field and office work, and in particular in the application of integrated design methods and tools in the context of sustainable mobility. They will be able to take an active part in the preparation of transport and traffic studies and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans.
By the end of the course, the students will have acquired the ability to scientifically analyze and organize the transport system at the urban level and its connections with the regional level, as well as the ability to make substantiated proposals in specific thematic areas related to urban mobility and its interactions, using technical means of research and analysis (including spatial analysis), quantitative and qualitative methods and decision-making tools. The general abilities for the students for whom the course is aimed are:
Thus, students will be able to participate in interdisciplinary working groups in the context of the preparation and implementation of spatial and transportation planning policies. This is ensured by the content of the course lectures as well as by the way of working with the students and monitoring their work.
