The aim of this course is to provide a spatial perception via satellite imagery and present research initiatives to the study of the earth surface. This involves the combination of satellite imagery and their derivatives with ancillary data (topographic, thematic maps and a variety of digital layers), taking into consideration the spatial, temporal, spectral and radiometric resolution of satellite imagery.
The main learning objectives of the undergraduate course, are as follows:
(a) to determine, collect and combine the necessary and focused spatial information in order to analyze problems regarding planning and urban design. More specifically to select satellite imagery available from the Greek or the international market, at either reduced prizes or at no cost (for educational purposes). The above is provided through an extensive research of websites of international organizations of companies (NASA, ESA, USGS, etc.).
(b) to understand in depth the real problem and to spatially estimate and generalize their conclusions.
(c) after interpreting the structure and the spatial distribution of land cover originated from aerial photographs and satellite imagery, to extract basic spatial information and to acquaint and manage specific software of satellite imagery processing (Erdas Imagine, Idrisi etc). The students will be capable to perform transformations, arithmetic and logical operations on satellite imagery.
(d) to classify satellite imagery aiming to discriminate and spatially localize the existing land cover, influencing the urban expansion and regional development. Additionally, to produce through the digital processing new layers and thematic maps.
(e) to compose processed satellite imagery and various digital layers in order to create an integrated system of spatial information which will dispose a more complex and complete structure, useful for the reorganization and resolution of a planning or urban spatial case study.
(f) to use powerful reliability graduated criteria of their results (contingency tables or the ΚΗΑΤ index) and to be informed of the international bibliography regarding the minimum success level of their image processing (>90%).
Basic knowledge in remote sensing will help the students to be familiar with the state-of-the-art technologies and their applications on planning and urban problems. Moreover, the analysis of spatial influences towards the regional development in order to provide new topics of interest and the necessary knowledge in their future academic or professional career in the thematic fields of urban, planning and regional development and other related sciences.
