The aim of the course is to provide the necessary theoretical knowledge for the compulsory course of the Spring Semester called “Spatial Planning Studio”, and for the elective courses related to urban planning.
The course is theory oriented (the relevant ‘technical skills’ are obtained during the Spring Semester), and intends, firstly, to the acquisition of specialized and timely knowledge, and, secondl,y to the development of critical thinking as well as research sensitivity.
More specifically, the pursued learning outcomes include the acquisition of expertise concerning the issues mentioned in the course’s description, the understanding of contemporary issues and concepts related to urban policy, the analysis of urban policies and the critical assessment of their impacts.
Considering the general pursued competencies of the graduates (as listed in the Diploma Supplement) the course contributes to the acquisition of the following:
– Research, analysis and synthesis of data and information, using the essential technologies,
-Team working,
– Working in an international and interdisciplinary environment,
– Generating new research ideas
-Critical thinking
– Promotion of free, creative and inductive thinking
The course covers a central subject to urban planning, which also has a special significance for regional planning due to the interaction of urban and regional planning policies. It analyzes in depth a number of issues which cover many components of urban policy and which have played an important role in shaping the current urban reality and/ or are expected to significantly affect the evolution of urban space in the coming years. The lectures concern the following topics:
1. The classics of urban theory and international urban policy till 1940
2. The international postwar urban policy
3. Regulatory and strategic plans
4. European Union and urban policy
5. Urban social problems and planning
6. Urban governance
7. New trends in urban space policies
8. Environmental urban planning
