The main purpose of this course is to acquire specific and new knowledge mainly based on the initiative of the students. The course has a seminar character as it is based on students presenting topics of their choice. Special and alternative forms of tourism are an extremely important, and perhaps the most dynamic, part of global tourism∙ several of the special and alternative forms of tourism are growing rapidly, while others are quite new. In recent years an interest has been developed, both in literature and practice, in Greece.
The course deepens more in the tourism direction of the compulsory course of winter semester’Theories and Policy of Tourism and Culture’, by analyzing some of the special and alternative forms of tourism. The emphasis is on cultural tourism which is the form of tourism that combines the two main objectives of the program and includes several categories (e.g. heritage tourism and museum tourism, film tourism, music tourism, gastronomy tourism). Other forms of tourism that will be analyzed are, for example: urban tourism, event tourism, sports tourism, rural tourism, ecotourism, congress tourism, marine tourism, cruise tourism, medical/wellness tourism, theme park tourism, second home tourism.
