The University was granted its administrative autonomy in 1999 and its first Rector, Professor Pantelis Lazaridis, is a member of the Department. The governing body of the University, the Senate, is comprised of Department chairs, faculty representatives and also includes a number of students and representatives of administrative and technical staff.
The DPRD began operation in 1989 and became independent in October 1996. The administrative body of the department is the General Assembly, which includes both Faculty and students. The Chairperson and the Deputy Chairperson who are elected every two years, and are responsible for the smooth operation of administrative and teaching activities, represent the department. Besides faculty, the Department also employs research personnel as well as administrative and technical personnel. Finally, the Department has established 12 Laboratories providing research facilities in various scientific fields.
