Planning special events (art festivals, mega-events, concerts, sporting events, etc) is recognized as a particular field within tourism planning with important impact on local development both in the international literature and practice. Hence, although that for the Greek reality and academic programmes, the study of events and festivals is not so popular, on an international level the subject is receiving attention and is taught in academic programmes related to tourism and development, but also as a practical professional skill. In this context the aim of the module is  to examine all aspect of planning and management of special events in relation to local development. The geographic dimension of special events mostly, but not exclusively, considers specific spatial entities (e.g. small cities, metropolitan areas, islands).
