The primary objective of the course is to familiarise students with the drafting of urban plans / studies and their understanding as regulatory planning tools, used to determine the urban organisation models of a neighbourhood (urban unit) or settlement and define land-use and construction regulations in the urban fabric. Greek legislation incorporates this type of plan into the second level of urban planning (Rymotomika Schedia Efarmogis, as they are currently known), itself a specialisation and implementation of the first-level plans (Local and Special Urban Plans). Plans of this type specify -whether at the city or settlement or even neighbourhood level or for the delineation of special use areas and zones- the regulations of the Local or Special Urban Plans (or until recently the General Urban Plans and the Open City Spatial and Residential Organisation Plans) regarding land use and zoning rules and define precisely both the communal, public and buildable spaces of the areas to be included in the plan and the infrastructure network diagrams.
The overall objective of the course is to familiarise students with the basic theoretical and methodological aspects associated with the drafting of urban plans, with additional discussions of the planning process. Beyond familiarisation with the basic elements of this planning level and the concepts, techniques and methodologies employed in the drafting of plans, students will acquire theoretical knowledge pertaining to current scholarly issues of the field and become acquainted with aspects of the modern institutional urban planning framework, with particular focus on its synergy with the level directly above.
The course is organised as a studio. It encompasses lectures and the preparation of a team project on issues concerning the revision of existing regulatory urban plans or the preparation of new such plans, on the scale of one or more urban units or entire settlement. The team project is prepared based on current institutional instruments and specifications.
The course content encompasses:
Students are evaluated based on written examinations (30%) and the group project (70%). According to the course outline, interim presentations of the project in its various stages of completion are mandatory.
