The Unit serves the educational needs of the Department at graduate and post-graduate levels on the one hand, and on the other, it carries out basic and applied research in Demography and Urban Sociology. More specifically, within its context, studies and surveys are carried out focusing on the analysis of demographic and social data for the needs of spatial planning and programming.
The study of demographic and social trends (as well as of their impact) at national and regional levels is one of the basic research activities of the laboratory. Also, in the context of its previous research activities the Unit specializes in the analysis of demographic trends in south-eastern Europe, giving particular emphasis in the study of minorities and of regional inequalities. DSA, for example, has collected, processed and analyzed data related to the post-war demographic trends in the countries of south-eastern Europe.
