1984
Professor Dimitris Goussios- Dr of Geography and Regional Planning. Professor at the University of Thessaly, Dept. of Planning and Regional Development, School of Engineering, Field: “Development and Regional Planning of rural areas”. He is the Director of the Laboratory of Rural Space and the Greek-French Postgraduate “Land Dynamics and Rural Development” (Dynamiques territoriales et Amenagement Rural -DYNTAR) based in Volos.
Classes he teaches, among others, include: “Rural Space Development”, “Geography”, “Regional Planning”, “Territorial Approach and Development of Rural Areas” and “Collective Educational Case Study (general methodology, design methodology, workshops (diagnosis, monitoring, evaluation, role of actors) and case study” at the Department of Planning and Regional Development, School of Engineering of the University of Thessaly, at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
His research interests include construction of territories within rural areas, the improvement of methodologies and tools for the identification, emergence and enhancement of local territorial resources; the role of heritage in the specificity and competitiveness of rural goods and services; multifunctionality and multi-activity with a focus on the evolution of family farming but also on the relationship of agricultural activity with the natural environment. He researches the role of small towns, the evolution of mountainous areas and the functioning of local government (community-municipality relations). Recently, his research has extended to the development of methodological tools in the areas of a) territorial diagnosis, b) strengthening participatory processes for local communities regarding the design and forms of cooperation and coordination (governance) and c) innovative participatory guarantee systems of territorial products.
He has participated, as coordinator and scientific director, in over 40 research (European and national) rural development programmes. They have also included a significant number of preparatory studies for local strategic development plans for rural areas. He has over 100 publications in edited volumes, in Greek and especially in foreign magazines, with 240 citations, while he has participated in over 90 international conferences as a speaker and a guest speaker. He plays a major role in international scientific networks in Europe and the Mediterranean. He was awarded the “Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques” (Order of Academic Palms) by the Ministry of Education and Research of France, in 2005. He was coordinator for the planning of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities of the Republic of Cyprus (2018-2019).
